Different circumstances

Fibre optic cables are used in all kinds of applications. From telecom to audio and video, and from medical applications to industry. Consequently, one optical fibre cable will be connected and disconnected from equipment more often than another. The circumstances also vary enormously. Practice has shown that in one application these cables function flawlessly for years, while in another application they require regular maintenance or repair.

Materials used

This also applies to the type of connector and cable a fibre optic cable is made of. An Expanded Beam connector can take more than an LC connector or an MTP connector. An armoured and rodent-proof outer cable is less likely to be crushed than a halogen-free single fibre patch cable.

Repair fibre optic cable on reel

If a temporary fibre optic connection is needed, a reeled fibre optic cable is often chosen. We see this a lot in audio and video applications, but also, for example, in military operations. These cables may consist of just two or four fibres, but there may also be 12, 24 fibres or a multiple thereof in one such cable. The various fibres are then fan out to the various connectors. This is an extremely vulnerable part of the fibre assembly. Therefore, there is often a special tube around this part to prevent damage to the thin optical fibres. Should this nevertheless happen, we repair the fibre optic cable for you quickly and expertly.

Checking and repairing optical fibre

As soon as we receive a fibre optic cable for repair, we carry out a visual check and use measuring equipment to determine exactly where the break or damage is. In our state-of-the-art workshop, we have various high-quality fibre optic test and measurement devices, such as OTDRs, Optical Spectrum Analyzers and interferometers. Depending on the position of the break or damage, we mount a new connector behind the break or damage. If this makes the cable too short, there is no other option than to say goodbye to the cable. If it’s possible, we repair the fibre optic cable, measure it and return it to you as soon as possible. Otherwise, we may produce a new cable for you that is similar to the original one.

Prevent fibre optic repairs

To avoid damage and repair of your fibre optic cables, several things are important to consider. First, the connector tips of fibre optics are very vulnerable. Even a small scratch or dirt can be fatal. When connecting a fibre optic connector to a device, it is therefore advisable to first clean the connector tip with special cleaning products. Secondly, many fibre optic cables can’t stand being subjected to mechanical stress. A heavy or sharp object on the cable can be disastrous. The maximum pulling force must also be observed to avoid pulling the thin fibres apart.

But rest assured, whatever type of fibre-optic cable is defective or damaged, we will always find a solution to repair or replace it quickly and professionally. Please contact us and be surprised about our fast service.
