‘Before joining MCAP in 2007, I was working in ICT. I trained as a system administrator, but I particularly enjoyed building systems. Just working with my hands. Eventually I ended up on the helpdesk, but that was not for me. I then went to a temporary employment agency to find out which job suited me best.’
Varied work
‘That's how I ended up at MCAP as a warehouse employee. In the beginning it was quite tough, with all those different cables, connectors and other materials. By now I know all the parts and know exactly where everything is stored. Besides managing stock and receiving and registering incoming goods, I also prepare materials for production. For instance, collecting the right materials for each job and cutting cables are also part of my duties. In the early days of our prestigious project KM3NeT, I even helped weld the bobs. These are the plastic joints that connect the tubes for the optical fibres. But if there is another job to do, or a machine needs maintenance, I do that too. With that, my work is very varied and I am something of a jack-of-all-trades.’
Optimising and modernising warehouse
‘I did that work alone for a long time, which was very instructive. Due to the growth in the number of orders, I now have a colleague: René. It was only when training René that I realised how extensive and varied the work is. Now we can work together to optimise and modernise the warehouse, but we can also have a good laugh together. A bit of male humour in a women's company is okay.’
Approachable and familiar
‘Meanwhile, I have been working part-time for some time now, which allows me to be there for my children and my father. Together with him, I like to go for a walk, go out on a terrace or to the cinema. I cherish those moments. And if something is wrong with the children, they don't make a fuss about it here. In dialogue, a lot is possible here, which is nice. Martin, Corina and Niels are also nice people. They are very approachable and familiar, and offer a listening ear when needed.’
