‘I worked in hairdressing for seven years, including the last six months as a branch manager near Vianen. I hoped this would make my eczema suffer less, but unfortunately it was not to be. This greatly affected my enjoyment of my work, but I also asked myself: what then? Via-via I met Efrie Wevers and she told me about the work at MCAP. I then had an interview with Corina van Aperloo and was allowed to try out an afternoon. As a hairdresser and hair stylist, I was always busy with my hands, so I enjoy creating something. Even though it is something completely different, I immediately saw the similarities with my old job: here you also have to work in a structured and precise way, and pay attention to details.’
Nice atmosphere
‘So I have been working at MCAP since March 2024 and that time has flown by! I get on very well with my colleagues. There is a nice atmosphere here and owners Martin, Corina and Niels just sit with us at the table during lunch. Even if one of them walks into the workshop, it doesn't suddenly get quiet. We can just be ourselves, and that feels very laid-back. As a hairdresser and hair stylist, I knew all the tricks of the trade, but it's even different here now. I now have to get out of my comfort zone and ask for help when I'm not sure about something. Then I think to myself: come on, tell me! After all, there is no specific training for this kind of work. You really have to learn this in practice from someone else. In this, we first learn to achieve a perfect result and then we try to work more and more efficiently.’
Discovering new things
‘Especially the fine soldering is difficult. I still need to grow in that, but I don't need to know everything at once either. I am still discovering new things and my horizons broaden every week. The projects we work on are often for the same customers, but we switch between them. For instance, one time I make cables with various connectors for packaging machines, and another time I help pull cables for the KM3NeT project. This keeps it nice and varied, although I have no problems at all with repetitive work.’
Time left
‘Together with my boyfriend, I play in a band with which we play well-known rock songs. I sing. Personally, I like listening to metal. And because I now work nice and close to home, I suddenly have a lot of time left, so we can ride motorbikes together more often. I have a Yamaha Diversion XJ600S, which is two years older than I am. Who knows, maybe one day I'll go for a nice Kawasaki, but we'll see later.’
