‘At 16, I started working at Philips in Breda. I worked there for five years until I became a mother. I then left for 15 years to take care of my two sons and then joined a cable assembly company in Rijen. That was a big company where I worked for 11 years, until the Dutch production workers were parted out piece by piece.’

One-day trial

‘In my search for other work, I then sent an open application to MCAP. After a while, Corina van Aperloo called me to ask if I was still interested. I then went for an interview and we agreed on a date to come for a trial run. That's how they usually do it here. But in the end I had to cancel on that day. I had just become a grandmother. Fortunately, Corina understood this very well and I went two days later anyway.’

Personal family business

‘I was hired immediately and joined a team of six or seven other ladies. Before that, I was used to working in a company with about 120 employees. Within this family business, it's a lot more personal. Meanwhile, we have grown to about 14 production workers here and fortunately I get along well with everyone.’

Freedom of choice

‘I still find this work challenging because you have to keep your mind on it. Currently, I am working on two small orders, the only difference between them being the length. I then process those as if they were one order. We just have that freedom of choice here. As a result, I only have to set up the machines once, which is very efficient. In fact, we do some operations automatically, such as stripping cables and crimping certain contacts.’

Varied work

‘Because we process all kinds of different cables and connectors at MCAP, it's very varied work, and I like that. I also enjoy the tinkering with small parts and the finer soldering work. I get a lot of satisfaction from working in a neat and structured way. It's the same at home. I spend a lot of time cleaning and tidying there too, except when the grandchildren are around. Then everything is allowed.’

Involvement

‘In recent years, we have had a lot to deal with at home. The great thing is that the colleagues and managers here are always very involved. And if there is anything, I can always turn to Corina or our team leader Rolf.’
