"Before I joined MCAP as an assembly worker on a permanent basis, I worked there through an employment agency. I was 23 at the time and found it surprisingly nice work, but with my administrative training, I saw my future in the office or at the reception desk. All in all, I enjoyed assembling cables for about two years. We put on our first fibre optic connectors during that time. In the beginning, it was a hassle. Just enough glue had to be used and the cleaving of the optical fibre could also go wrong. And then drawing eights to polish the connector tip. Back then, we still did all that manually. Over time, that was all automated."

From assembly to sales

"After indicating that I would like to take on a more administrative role, I was given more administrative and secretarial work. I then joined the sales department in the late 1990s. Since then, I have had a lot of contact with customers and suppliers. As soon as someone requests a quotation from us, we calculate the price. We then look up the purchase prices of all the individual parts or request them from the suppliers. Our assembly book contains all the standard times for the various actions that need to be taken to assemble the cable in question. This provides us with a guideline for determining assembly costs. This starts, of course, from cutting cables, dismantling, finishing any shielding to soldering or crimping contacts, applying labels, fitting connectors, testing and packaging. My experience in assembly helps me a lot with this."

Growing with the organisation

"In all these years, I have seen a lot of changes. We used to make a lot of ICS cables or V35 assemblies. Those involved a lot of handwork. That technology has changed, so we don't make those anymore. We also no longer make network cables that are widely available on the market. Meanwhile, our machinery has expanded considerably and a lot of processing is automated. And where we used to have books full of drawings, this is now all digitised. These are now made in AutoCAD, which has brought a lot more unity. By the way, it still amazes me to find out what kind of machines and devices our cables are used in. So we have so many different customers in so many different markets, and many of them we have known for a very long time. What's nice is when you work longer at a smaller company that you grow with the organisation and the customers.”

Convivial family business

"I think as a company we stand out from others in a few ways. We are very convivial at MCAP. Clients also notice this in the way we communicate. We keep them well informed about the progress of projects. Even if there is a delay somewhere, we explain it nicely. Customers like that. When we receive a request, we try to respond quickly. A lot of attention is paid to special moments at holidays, such as Christmas, birthdays, staff outings and the annual barbecue. I find it pleasant and enjoyable to work at MCAP."
