“Ever since I was 17, I have been working with cables,’ Patricia proudly explains. ‘That was at companies employing more than 150 people. There, everyone had their own task. One person cut the cables, another made them into a wiring harness, and yet another put the contacts on. When I came here I had to get used to it. Here it was much smaller. There were only four or five of us in the workshop and during the break we would sit at the same table with the owners Martin and Corina van Aperloo to eat our sandwiches. I started here as an assembly worker, but now I am a jack-of-all-trades. I do all sorts of things here and I like that. After all, I like everything, like cutting cables, production and testing.”
From prototype to perfect serial product
“I process all kinds of copper cables. From heavy, thick industrial cables to very thin ones. If a prototype cable has to be made, I often get to do that. I enjoy that too. I receive a container with parts and a technical drawing. If I come across something that is not quite right, I indicate it on the drawing and discuss it with Niels. After assembly and testing, the cable then goes to the customer. He then builds the cable into the application and finds out in practice whether the design and implementation are right. If not, we process the feedback, adjust the drawing and the cable, and make sure the cable is perfect afterwards.”
Each cable fully tested
“Apart from working in production, I am also the backup to our assistant team leader Efrie. She is also responsible for testing the cables, so I regularly take over from her. Even though we perform check after check during assembly, at MCAP every cable is fully tested. By the way, I am never allowed to test my own products. We are very strict about that.”
Cabling for all kinds of applications
“We assemble cabling for all kinds of applications, such as wind turbines, speed cameras or blood pressure monitors. But also for industrial, military or scientific applications. Assembling cables is great fun work, but you have to keep your head. A mistake is easy to make. Sometimes it’s also delicate work, and it is useful if you are also a bit technical. After all, on some machines we regularly have to swap certain parts.”
Pleasant working atmosphere
Patricia is also pleased with the working atmosphere: “We are very collegial towards each other, which is very nice. Working hours are also good and if there is anything, it will be handled with flexibility. That's super nice! I experienced that myself in 2020 when my husband passed away after a short illness. Everyone was very sympathetic and I was allowed to stay at home for a few weeks to recover a bit and be there for my son. He was only 7 years old at the time. What is also common here is that we always get something nice at Christmas, Easter and birthdays. Martin and Corina don't have to do that, but it's very nice.”
